Challenge

Complete the project within an extremely tight timeframe without compromising on quality
Understand and translate highly specific proprietary data and operational processes
Migrate complex Excel-based workflows into a streamlined, web-friendly user experience
Develop a full visual identity, including the platform's logo and branding assets

My role

As the main UI/UX Designer, I analyzed Edison's daily operational workflows to deeply understand real user needs. My goal was to identify pain points without disrupting the established practices that the team relied on.

I proposed solutions that enhanced efficiency while maintaining familiar processes, ensuring a smooth transition. Additionally, I developed a dedicated UI Kit to guarantee consistency, accelerate production, and enable future scalability of the platform.

What was my contribution?

Understanding Operations and User Needs

Business and Data Immersion:
I conducted an in-depth study of Edison's proprietary workflows and technical data, ensuring the redesign would respect and preserve their operational value.

On-Site Operational Analysis:
By observing real loading and unloading operations, I identified friction points and bottlenecks directly within critical business processes.

User Research and Pattern Discovery:
Through interviews and workshops with operators, I mapped key usage patterns and surfaced operational inefficiencies to guide the system redesign.

Reframing Systems and Building the Experience

Legacy Excel Deconstruction:
I analyzed and restructured Edison's Excel-based tools, extracting core logic to create a web-native, scalable architecture without disrupting familiar workflows.

Optimized Information Architecture:
Applying the 3-Click Rule, I designed user journeys that minimized interactions while preserving task efficiency, improving both speed and usability.

Rapid Prototyping and Early Validation:
Wireframes and high-fidelity prototypes were built and tested iteratively with real users, allowing refinements aligned with real-world operational needs.

Delivering Scalability and Securing Adoption

Modular UI Kit Development:
A scalable, extensible UI Kit was created to ensure consistency, simplify maintenance, and support future growth across operational teams.

Continuous Engineering Collaboration:
I maintained direct loops with the development team, validating usability, technical feasibility, and performance at every release checkpoint.

Field Testing and Final Refinements:
Real-world testing with operators provided essential feedback, enabling us to fine-tune the system and ensure smooth adoption without operational disruption.

Final thoughts

Working on a complex project in the energy sector was an incredibly stimulating experience. As a passionate sailor, contributing to the improvement of the daily operations of such a high-caliber team was deeply rewarding. From an ethical perspective, knowing that the new system also helped reduce marine pollution caused by human error made me even prouder of the final outcome. It was a project where design truly made a positive impact — on both people and the environment.
